Having successfully completed the four sections and now ready to start the last section of this module, I want to take some time to reflect upon the coursework so far. One thing that I am sure of at the end of this module is that the earlier four sections were very interesting for me, as I chose to explore each one of them differently. The greatest part of learning with the OCA is that it allows you to explore each segment according to your needs and the path that you want to choose for yourself. I find the coursework quite liberating and open in the fact that it allows each one of us to take-way from the brief what we want to see, create or produce, as per the direction we want to take it in. In that way, the coursework is extremely open ended and allows us the freedom to choose and take it in the direction that we want it to.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all the sections of the coursework, where I have explored various challenging situations and briefs, and produced quality work to match them. Each section has been extremely helpful in not only adding to the technological knowledge but also in the creative application of ideas into resulting outcomes. I have explored making of a book, short-animated videos, exploring natural light and controlled or artificial lighting in the studio. The photographers that I have researched about, through the entire duration of the coursework have greatly expanded my knowledge and ideas on creativity, not only inspiring me to reach greater heights by learning, implementing and improving my existing skill sets but have also added valuable knowledge to be translated into exciting and creative outputs. I feel that has been the best part about learning with the OCA – that it allows you the creative freedom to choose a brief and implement it in your own way. I have tried to take each brief as per the direction I want to take at that particular time and somehow that has worked quite well for me.
The previous section has kind of bent me towards controlled and manipulated lighting and my final assignment and the ones leading to it have explored this. From the first to the last assignment, there has been varied and diversified work, experimenting with not only the various modes of the camera but also different subjects and diverse environments. In that ways, am quite happy with the fact that exploration has happened in different directions, kind of learning as one goes forward. I am the kind of person who likes to plan ahead and have everything in order before I start but I have allowed myself to go with the flow kind of an approach to this coursework. Every time I have tried to read ahead I have been unable to have a complete clarity of thought as to what I would want to do for that section. But as and when I reached that section clarity came on its own, like doors opening kind of a thing. So far, I have been able to successfully understand the brief and execute it as per my understanding and desire to approach it through a particular methodology or approach.
It’s keeping me excited, enthused, willing to do more, and achieve greater results than the last time, which I think is a good thing. Gradually but consistently, I feel I am better equipped to understand other people’s work, implement key learnings into my own work and become better at what I do. And in that way this journey has been totally awesome for me, for the lack of a better word!
