My video assessment for Assignment 4 was held with my tutor, Andrea Norrington, on the 19th of November and she feels that I have made really good progress in completing my work.
Feedback on assignment: Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Quality of Outcome, Demonstration of Creativity
We discussed my learning about studio lighting for this section and the challenges that one faces while doing the actual shoot as the difference between reading about successfully lighting a subject and actually implementing it in real life are two different things. The challenges of lighting that I faced while shooting with my yoga teacher in Ex 4.4 :Personal Voice and how it prepared me towards my assignment was noticed and Andrea appreciated my using the insights that I had gained from this and how it helped me towards my final assignment shoot with the acrobats. We discussed how I achieved the results and also my thoughts about taking this project forward next with the use long long shutter speeds. So thats already in the pipeline somewhere in the near future – on my bucket list.
She absolutely loved the whisky shots as well and congratulated me on successfully accomplishing a very difficult subject well.
Coursework- Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Demonstration of Creativity
Andrea feels that this area continues to be completed well. She expressed that in both the whisky bottle and the egg exercise I have really engaged with lighting and hopefully am gaining good skills in using artificial light. Andrea recommended looking at photographer David Hobby’s work as he has written/demonstrated extensively on using off-camera flash which may be a direction that might interests me.
Research- Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis
We discussed how I have applied the research into developing work, for example use of window light in Ex 4.1 – Daylight. At the time of the feedback session I was not clear as to what I am doing for the next assignment hence Andrea asked me get in touch when I did so she may suggest some photographers to follow up.
Learning Log- Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis
Andrea said that I am reflecting well on my work and outlining how I can further develop
ideas/technical skills and to continue to keep doing this.
Suggested reading/viewing- Context
David Hobby – use of off-camera flash – a good starting point is his blog: https://strobist.blogspot.com/
Accomplished images showing both technical and artistic consideration.
Considered use of artificial lighting to further your skills.
Areas for development
I shared some ideas with Andrea on how I would like to these ideas forward –
Explore using a longer shutter speed and synch as you outlined on call. – This is something that I want to attempt as a different take on the acrobat shoot, this time using slow shutter speed.
Look at how lighting can change mood – particularly with the still life set ups for whisky
bottles. – Since I had only attempted two-set-ups for the whisky shoot, I do want to in the future explore different lighting set-ups to change the look/feel/mood of the image.
