The first assignment “One Square Mile” has been on a roller coaster ride since I signed up for this course. My world, as well as everyone else’s, has changed overnight, to put it mildly. I was on a long tour in the wild for around three months, when abruptly it was cut short and that too without any warning. I had just managed to arrive back home when the lockdown in our country was announced with barely a 4 hours notice. All my thoughts and ideas that I had wanted to do for this assignment were now rendered useless. The lockdown here is unlike the UK where you are allowed to step out of your home at least. We are not allowed to step out at all and all groceries and medicines are either home delivered or are available inside every residential complex where you can follow the norms of social distancing to get the necessities. The shelves are mostly empty and just vegetables, fruits and dairy is available if at all. We are literally in a prison like situation with the lockdown now being extended till the 30th of April at least. There are police barricades and anyone stepping out can be penalised and prosecuted. Having given you a background of the situation here, let me briefly discuss what I had in mind before the lockdown.
Let me rewind a bit to take you back on the ideas ideas as I started to reflect upon it. I have attempted this assignment in my FiP, the link to which is – https://archnasingh.blog/2017/08/16/one-square-mile/. Since I had attempted this assignment earlier, I wanted to look at it with a different idea this time, so as to not make it repetitive. The world as is seen today is very different from what I grew up in as a child. I had lovely memories of things that are from a bygone era in the contemporary world. I wondered if I could possibly use those things as my image bank and build up my assignment on that. Many of those things, like old record players, old military telephones, transistors, etc. are very lovingly kept at my parent’s house. I wished to pay them a visit and grab those treasures and build my one square mile on that. But man proposes and god disposes and thats exactly what happened upon my return. With the lockdown being announced at 8PM on March 23rd, with no notice whatsoever, my trip to my parent’s house was no longer possible and along with that, my idea went down the drain.
Being confined now to my house and not even allowed to step out, I am thinking of new ways to approach this assignment. Since my kids returned from the university in the UK just in time, and therefore, my stress levels being under control, these are a few of the ideas that I am contemplating:
- My kids and our daily routine as a subject
- Recreating from old pics of my daughter when she was a baby and now that she is 20 years old.
- The view from the balcony
- Documenting birds from my balcony
I will elaborate more on each of these ideas later as I have some initial ideas brewing, and would love to hear your thoughts as to what you think would be your pick. In the meantime I am going to refresh my research by looking at the reading and research list once again and see what clicks. This might not be the best of ways to perhaps approach this assignment but definitely invention is the mother of necessity and I gotta find ways of attempting this assignment in a unique way.
I look forward to comments and feedback and suggestions so I can build up on the most striking idea and follow it as an assignment. Also, feel free to trash any/all ideas if you don’t think it works.
